Technics SL-1500 - Where can I get a cheap dust cover?
|
After returning two noisy Project Debuts to Richer Sounds - I went the
2nd hand route and got a Technics SL-1500 almost by luck as I was
actually collecting a Yamaha DSP-E800 from fleabay, and the owner was
about to put the turntable on.
Nice solid construction. These things must run for decades. Two
problems,
No dust cover. (The seller bought it like that off fleabay again).
Any good ways to souce something very cheaply (that is presentable).

Blimey! Why not just throw a towel over it?

You might scoff :-)
I have been using a bit of silk but the snag factor/careful drapery all
became too much and I thought I'd give it a try. I suppose I could have
stitched something together, but my sewing is worse (even) than my
soldering.

Also , there's a small amount of mains hum. I suspect its coming from my
CA A500. The £20 Phone Stage also sounds very noisy when turned up to
full volume with nothing playing (Not mains hum but Like white noise
with more bass) So I may remove it and go for a CA 640P.
In fact I may swap both the CA A500 and the Yamaha DSp-E800 for a CA
540R V2 as the two amp thing is too fiddly for my liking.

I bought the 540R a couple of months ago, and I've been using it as a
convenience (lazy) option to valves since. It's very good indeed IMO. I
use it as stereo only for digital video-audio and MP3, and as a preamp
for the TT. I've recently compared the power amp output to:
Quad 405-2 - the 405 goes a little louder, but can be shrill,
emphasising sibilance;
Beard P100 - 100W valve amp goes much louder, and simply adds some depth
(texture, realism, valve-type stuff) and bass weight. Not much in it
tone-wise which in my book is pretty high praise.
I'd advise against the black if (like me) you have failing near vision.
I've had to learn the panel controls because the labelling is too feeble ;-)
