Why must we have another locked-down pay someone for use of a codec?
How about a open source codec for once!!!
It's like paying Microsoft x for your MP3 player, even though you
never use their sh*t codec in your player / encoded collection.

Perhaps because you get what you pay for.
Once upon a time, before That Woman dismembered the public sector, the
BBC might have developed "free" technology. These days they pay
through the nose for someone else to do the work.

Erlangen. The MPEG- 4 HE-AAC and MPEG Surround compression
technologies, recently introduced by WorldDMB, enable new DAB services
in addition to the existing MPEG Layer-2. WorldDMB (referring to
“digital multimedia broadcasting”) is an international,
non-governmental organisation promoting the adoption and
implementation of Eureka 147 based technologies worldwide."
