Could someone record R3 on satellite?

Could someone with a satellite PC card or a Dreambox record R3 on satellite
for me at some pre-arranged time so that I can record R3 off Freeview at the
same time and then I can download the file recorded off satellite and upload
both files to my website so that myself and others that are interested can
download both the Freeview and satellite files and compare them.

I want to test my hypothesis that R3 sounds better on satellite than on
Freeview, because the BBC does its own uplinking to the satellites, so R3 on
satellite shouldn't be transcoded, whereas R3 on Freeview probably is
It outputs SPDIF so it can go into a DA converter..
It turns out that Bayern Klassik doesn't simulcast the Proms, so you'd only
need to record R3, so if you could do that on the Skystar PC card that'd be
My Dreambox's disc was taken for something else - it's not even with me any
more.

I suppose it would be possible to cobble something together to record the
SPDIF to another device but it would be a big operation as the only
recording devices I have in the same room as the Dreambox record in
Okay, not to worry.

Surely someone you are in contact with has a satellite receiver near a PC or
Some people with appropriate equipment have said they'd do it on here, but

CD recorder?

great.
Yes I know I've been out all evening working!..
Okay. I've set my PC card to record both sessions tonight anyway.

I'll get around to this, as soon as;)

mind you the alberty hall acoustic isn't the best in the world;!...
We don't have to record the Proms, and it would be better if we recorded
something that was high quality, so if you or anyone else has any
suggestions of something that's usually high quality then let me know.
St John's, Smith Square? ;-) But I think perhaps you have
misunderstood Tony: it's just the acoustics of the RAH that are a bit
less than ideal, not the broadcasts themselves. Why not have a listen
tonight and see whether they bother you?
I listened the other day and FM sounded great, whereas R3 on DAB sounded,
well, how you'd expect R3 on DAB to sound (bit rate reduction or no bit rate
reduction), i.e. soulless and dull as dish water.
But what about the acoustics of the RAH, and the matter of whether you
think they'd be likely to affect your test?
But as the recordings will be of the same material just on different
platforms then the effect of dodgy acoustics will be present on both
recordings.
But the acoustics are an essential part of the performance and should
be reproduced accurately.
The differences are the most important thing when you're comparing the same
source material just received via different platforms.

BTW, 'dull as ditchwater' is the usual expression hereabouts. Our dish
water is anything but dull ;-)
You haven't seen United Utilities' water.
Fair enough.

Anyway, are you going to offer to record the Proms tonight (please) on your
Dreambox just in case Tony is working?
Yes 'fraid so, no peace for the wicked!;;
Unfortunately I have another commitment tonight, but I'm hoping to
help Bryn out with tomorrow's, if I can fit them in with Barbe-Bleue
Did you end up recording the Proms last night?
Alas, I lost some of the second half of the early Prom because my
PC unexpectedly shut down. But I have the closing section of The
Firebird, which should be excellent for your purpose -- a very
large orchestra and wide frequency range and extreme dynamics (though
I reckon they were leaning on the faders a bit towards the end). Give
me your email address and I'll bung it over.

The Steve Reich might have been more to your taste (did you listen?)
but it's less typical of what R3 plays. Unfortunately I didn't hear
much of either, except on a clock radio while preparing a floor for
sanding. But you'll be pleased to know that it was an FM clock radio
;-)
Will you be recording the first session? I can set my card up to record the
first session, but it tends to crash if it's asked to record twice, and I
might be out tomorrow night.

If so, I can do the Freeview at the same time. Pity you didn't mention
I can record Freeview, what I need is for someone else to record satellite
at the same times.

this last year -- I had parallel recordings of a live R3 relay from
the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in Freeview, DAB amd DVB-s versions.
Think I've deleted them all now, though.

transcoded.
Hello Steve, I'd like to help here, but I don't have any way of
recording MP2s. Just one thought, Bayern-4 are doing some of the Proms,
It would still be possible to make comparisons if you can record at high
quality. For example, if your satellite receiver has a digital output and
you can record that on a PC, the audio shouldn't be degraded at all
(ignoring bit errors in the S/PDIF link), but the file sizes would be pretty
massive. But even that wouldn't be a problem if you've got a fast broadband
connection (I have, finally, so I don't mind downloading large files).

We'd also need to agree a recording start and stop time.

Anyway, let me know what kit you use for recording, and we'll take it from
there.

presumably at 320 kbit/sec, and it would be interesting to compare
Bayern-4's offering with that of R3 on Freeview and that of R3 on
Yes, that would be interesting.

satellite.
That would be interesting, though I wonder what sort and quality the
contribution link is between the Beeb and Bayern-4 ?
Yes indeed we can record from Satellite and FM this is a DABble free
zone tho!...

So if all else fails .. please call or mail...
What kit do you use to record off satellite, Tony? Also, my PC sound card is
bust, so if I don't go and get a new one today, it'd be good if you could
record FM at the same time.

Presumably you've got fast broadband?
We have a choice of a Skystar PC card, Dreambox, or, Two AD3600's and
yes BB.. ADSL and ntl..
You can do all of it simultaneously then! ;-)

Seriously, as you've got a Skystar PC card and a Dreambox, could you do the
Radio 3 and Bayern Klassik simultaneously? I take it the Dreambox records as
MP2 and you can transfer that to your PC?

Would you like to do it tonight? If so, say what time do you want to start
recording, so that I can record Freeview at the same time?

The Proms are on at the following times tonight:

7.30 - 8.05 and 8.25 - 9.30

What duration d'ya reckon? 10 minutes, 20 minutes?
Yes I'll get this sorted over le weekend as all the required cables
don't go to the same place..don't ask its complicated;)

comes of having a froggie missus:))

If anybody could do that I'd really appreciate it.
