Compressor on Vocals Questions

I gig as a solo acoustic guitar/singer for a living.

I purchased a Crown CM311 Headset mic with Shure wireless for guitar and the
The RNC is an excellent unit- have owned several. Should fit this job fine.

headset to go wireless so I can get in the crowd. (I play in your face
punter rock music)

The problem I have been having is that I have poor vocal technique and can
not compensate for Mic technique (mainly pulling away from the mic when
yelling/screaming out big notes) This is my main issue with the headset, I
am finding I have to hold back on belting out some vocals.

A friend who uses a headset micsuggested to put a compressor on the vocals
to overcome this problem.

So I got an Alesis 3630 which seems like a pretty good device.

My Questions are these:

1. I was going to treat it like two compressors as I only use guitar and
vocals. Is it better to channel insert the compressor or just run the mic
through it?
I tried Behringer Virtuliser and a B Graphic and they sounded like mud. Is
the Composer Pro a better device??

2. Do you think I should put the guitar through it? I feel my guitar
technique is good. Or will the fact I will be compressing the vocals be a
consideration?
OK

3. What steps would you guys go through to determining the settings on the
compressor? I am not very knowelagble at all about this and have only used a
compressor on guitar years ago.
Thnaks for the advice

Any guidance would be appreciated.
